1900~1911   孫樂文   David L. Anderson

       

         美國喬治亞州人,獲Washington & Lee University神學博士學位。1884年,被美國監理會派任至中國蘇州,從事傳教與教育的工作。1896年3月,開辦「宮巷書院」,亦名「宮巷中西書院」。1900年春,美國監理會議決合併在中國創辦的三個書院「中西書院」、「博習書院」及「宮巷書院」,創辦東吳大學,由先生擔任首任校長。1911年3月16日,孫樂文校長病逝,學校以此日為紀念日(University Day),亦為日後東吳大學之校慶日。

Born in Georgia in the United States, David L. Anderson obtained his theology doctorate degree at Washington & Lee University. In 1884, he was sent by The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to Soochow, China, to do missionary and educational work. In March of 1896, he founded Kung Hang School, which is also known as Kung Hang Anglo-Chinese College. 
In the spring of 1900, The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, decided to combine the three schools it had established in China and appointed Mr. Anderson to be its first president. Mr. Anderson passed away on March 16 of 1911. To commemorate him, Soochow University designated this date as University Day, which became the school’s Anniversary Date even until now.  

 1911~1922  葛賚恩  Cline, John W.

      

         生於美國北卡羅來納州,成長於阿肯色州,畢業於Vanderbilt University。1897年來華傳教,在中國服務長達50年,先至上海中西書院和蘇州博習書院任教。1905年,接掌中西書院。1911年,擔任東吳大學第二任校長。先生出任校長後,上海中西書院併入東吳大學。合併後的東吳大學大幅提升師資與辦學規模,中西書院的財務盈餘也緩解東吳的財務困難,東吳大學由此步入一個新的歷史進程。

Born in North Carolina in the United States, John W. Cline grew up in Arkansas and graduated from Vanderbilt University.  In 1897, he came to China as a missionary and stayed in China for nearly half a century.  He taught at Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai and Buffington Institute in Soochow.  In 1905, he took charge of Anglo-Chinese College. In1911, Mr. Cline was elected by the school board of directors the second president of Soochow University.  At the start of his term of office,  the Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai was merged into Soochow University. The consolidation of the three institutions had considerably increased the number of teachers and expanded the scope of the school. In the meantime, Anglo-Chinese College’s profits helped pull Soochow University out of financial straits, prompting the school to enter a new era.  

 1922~1927  文乃史  Nance, Walter Buckner 

      

        美國田納西州人,畢業於Vanderbilt University,1896年來華傳教,從事宣教及教育的工作。曾於博習及中西書院教授神學、哲學及文學課程。1914-1922年任東吳大學副校長、1922-1927年任校長、1928-1949年擔任西顧問7(Western Adviser)。先生不但參與了東吳大學的創辦,也是東吳大學首屆七位校董會成員之一,不僅投入教學工作,亦參與規劃學校建築設施,協助制定各項規章制度。先生服務東吳大學長達53年,是東吳美籍宣教士中服務最久的一位。

Born in Tennessee in the United States, Walter Buckner Nance graduated from Vanderbilt University. He was sent to China in 1896 to do missionary and educational work. During his stay in China, he taught theology, philosophy and literature at Buffington Institute in Soochow and Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai. Mr. Nance was the vice president of Soochow University between 1914 and 1922, president between 1922 and 1927, and Western Adviser between 1928 and 1949.  He had an important role in the founding of Soochow University and was also among the first seven members of the school’s board of directors . In addition to dedicating himself to teaching, he also laid out plans for buildings for all sorts of facilities as well as drafting rules and regulations for the school. His 53-year-long devotion to Soochow University made him the American missionary who served the longest in various terms ever. 

 1927~1949  楊永清  Y. C. Yang 

      

         浙江省鎮海縣人,1909年獲東吳大學文學士學位,後考取公費留美,入Washington University,研究國際公法與外交,獲得碩士學位。曾任北京外交部條約司、秘書及大學講師等職。1927年初,獲選東吳首任華人校長,訂「養天地正氣,法古今完人」為校訓。掌理校務期間,東吳大學各項校務蓬勃發展,成為中國東南著名的高等學府之一。1941年,奉校董會之命,赴美向監理會述職。後因太平洋戰爭,被迫滯留美國。先生在美期間,東吳大學先後由文乃史及盛振為先生擔任代理校長,直至1947年先生返國再掌校務。

Born in Chen Hai county in Zhejiang province, Y. C. Yang attained his bachelor degree in literature at Soochow University in 1909.   After graduation, he won a government scholarship to study in the United States.  He first entered Wisconsin University to study politics, economics, and education and later transferred to Washington University to study international laws and diplomacy and obtained a master degree in those fields. He worked in the Department of Treaties in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. He was also a secretary and university instructor.  In early 1927, Mr. Yang was appointed the first Chinese president of Soochow University. After he was sworn in, he announced that Soochow University’s Chinese motto  will be養天地正氣,法古今完人, corresponding to the already existing English motto “Unto A Full-grown Man.”  Mr. Yang hired more outstanding professors and installed more laboratory equipment. As a result, in the following years, Soochow University could evolve into one of the best-known higher education institutions in southeastern China. In 1941, Mr. Yang was ordered by the school board of directors to head to the United States to report his work. Shortly after, the Pacific war broke out, forcing him to remain in the U.S.   During this period, Walter Buckner Nance and Sheng Chen Wei served in succession as acting presidents until Mr. Yang’s return .  

 1951~1952  丘漢平  Chiu, Han-Ping

       

         福建省海澄縣人,東吳大學法科學士、美國喬治華盛頓大學法學博士。並被選為義大利皇家學院「羅馬法」榮譽研究員。返國後,歷任東吳大學、暨南大學、交通大學、中國公學教授,並執律師業。抗戰時,任福建省政府委員、創辦福建大學,兼職校長。勝利後,當選立法委員。 先生在台仍念念不忘教育事業,曾任東吳補習學校校長,為東吳復校初期拓展校務,煞費經營,功甚卓著。

Dr. Chiu, of Haicheng County, Fujian Province, obtained a bachelor degree in Law from Soochow University. He then went to the United States and received a doctorate degree in Law from George Washington University. In the following years he was also elected to be an honorary research fellow in Roman Law of the Palermo Royal Academy in Italy. After returning to China, he taught as professor at Soochow University, Chinan University, Chiao Tong University, and the National China University. He also practiced law at that time. During the war, he founded Fujian University, and served the university’s acting President. After the war, he was elected a member of the Legislative Yuan. After he came to Taiwan, Dr. Chiu continued his career in promoting education. He was the first Principal of Soochow Preparatory School and made important contributions toward the university’s operation in the early stage of re-establishment.  

 1952~1954  施季言  Shih, Ji-Yan

         江蘇省海門縣人,東吳大學理學士,歷任東吳大學總務、訓導、校監。來台後,任陽明山管理局局長,且為惇敘中學創辦人。1950年,先生鑒於國家需才孔亟,與東吳校友致力復校工作,1951年10月,東吳補習學校正式招生,1952年9月,先生出任校長,苦心擘劃復校工作,厥功甚偉。

Mr. Shih, of Haimen County, Jiangsu Province, after having received a bachelor’s degree in Science from Soochow University, served as Chief of General Affairs, Chief of Disciplinary Office, and Chief Inspector of the school.After arriving in Taiwan, he became the Director of Yang Ming Shan Management Bureau, and later founded the Tun Hsu High School.In 1950, he realized that the country was in need of university-educated professionals and dedicated himself, with other alumni in Taiwan, to the reactivation of Soochow University. In October 1951, Soochow Preparatory School started student enrollment, and in September 1952 Mr. Shih took office as Principal. He can to a large extent be credited with the re-establishment of Soochow University in Taiwan. 

  1954~1955   陳霆銳   Chen, Ting-Ruei

         江蘇省吳縣人,東吳大學法學士、美國密歇根大學法學博士。歷任東吳大學、暨南大學教授、制憲國民大會代表。來台後,仍執律師業務。1954年東吳法學院奉准成立,先生出任院長,為校務篳路藍縷孜孜矻矻,貢獻殊多。

Dr. Chen, of Wu County, Jingsu Province, earned a bachelor degree in Law from Soochow University and a doctorate in Law from Michigan University, USA. His career included professor at Soochow University and Chinan University, and a member of the National Assembly. After he arrived in Taiwan, he continued to practice law. When, in 1954, Soochow Law College was established, Dr. Chen took office as its first Dean. He worked assiduously for Soochow University through all those difficult years. His contributions were invaluable.  

  1955~1957  曹文彥  Tsao, Wen-Yen

   

         浙江省人,中央大學法學士,美國加州大學法學博士。歷任中華民國駐澳領事、建國法商學院、台灣大學法律系、東吳大學法律系教授、教育部國際文教處處長、東吳大學法學院院長、中華民國駐美大使館文化參事。先生任法學院院長,值本校復校、建校初期,因前補習學校學生五百名併入,復校後招收新生四百名,產生學籍和兵役等問題,經先生多方面溝通與交涉,始獲分年次圓滿解決。

Dr. Chao, of Zhejian Province, received a bachelor degree in Law from Central University and obtained a doctorate degree in Law from the University of California. Subsequently he was vice consul at the ROC consulate in Australia, then professor in the Law School of National Taiwan University and the Law Department of Soochow University. Later he was Chief of the Bureau of International Cultural and Educational Relations in the Ministry of Education, Dean of the Law College of Soochow University, and Cultural counselor in the ROC Consulate in the USA. When Dr. Chao took office as Dean of the Law College, that was the early stage of the school’s reactivation. There emerged problems of student identification and military service status among the five hundred students who came over from the Preparatory School and those four hundred students newly enrolled in the Law College. With untiring communication and skillful negotiation, Dr. Chao finally successfully resolved the problem by sorting the students’ status according to their year of birth.  

 1957~1968  石超庸  C. Y. Stone

   廣西省藤縣人,東吳大學法學士、耶魯大學法學博士,並入巴黎大學研究國際公法。歷任東吳大學法學院教授、暨南大學法學院院長、監察院監察委員。來台後,歷任東吳大學法學院院長、東吳大學校長。先生任院長十年,嚴謹務實,整飭學風,晚歲積勞成疾,仍為校務全力以赴,對本校的恢復大學建制貢獻良多。

Dr. Stone, of Teng County, Guongxi Province, received a bachelor degree in Law from Soochow University, and a doctorate in Law from Yale University, USA. He also studied International Law at the University of Paris. Subsequently, he was professor in the College of Law of Soochow University, Dean of the College of Law of Chinan University, and member of the Control Yuan.
After coming to Taiwan, he was Dean of Soochow Law College, and President of Soochow University, after the school obtained that status. During his 10 years as President, Dr. Stone worked on planning and managing the affairs of the university and strengthened its organization and academic disciplines. Despite his poor health condition in his advanced age, he still worked with all his strength for the school’s development. The reactivation of Soochow University was largely due to his contributions.  

 1968~1969   桂崇基  C. G. Kwei

        江西省貴谿縣人,美國哥倫比亞大學政治學碩士。並先後任紐約州文官委員會審察之職、廣東大學教授、考試院考試委員、國民大會代表。來台後,任東吳大學政治系教授、教務長、校長、名譽校長。先生個性恬淡,一生獻身教育,其身教、言教莫不秉持「人格是尚,真理是從」的原則,春風化雨,數十年如一日,深得師生愛戴,主持校務其間,建立許多規章制度。

Mr. Kwei, of Guixi County, Jiangxi Province, received a master’s degree in Political Science from Columbia University, USA. He was an examiner of civil service committee in New York State, professor at Guangdong University, member of the Examination Yuan, and member of the National Assembly. After arriving in Taiwan, his roles at Soochow University were professor in the Political Science Department, Dean of Academic Affairs, President and after that Honorary President. Mr. Kwei was by nature a rather quiet person, with most of his life devoted to education. He joined the Soochow faculty during one of its most difficult time – the reactivation period. At Soochow, he very clearly lived up to his motto “Respect integrity and follow the truth,” and he set a good example with his words and deeds. For decades, he educated students and was dearly respected and loved by faculty and students. While in office, he established many regulations which have had a strong effect on the future development of the university.   

 1969~1983   端木愷   Joseph K. Twanmoh

         

         安徽省當塗縣人,東吳大學法學士、紐約大學法學博士。曾執行律師業務多年,在國際間頗享盛名。並先後任安徽大學法學院院長、國民參政會參政員、立法委員、司法院祕書長、行政院祕書長、光復大陸設計研究委員會副主任委員。東吳在台復校,先生參與最力,先後擔任同學會會長、董事會董事、代理董事長、1969年任校長之職,歷十四年,致力建立完整大學規模,1984年任董事長,以至謝世,晚年心力悉付東吳。

Dr. Twanmoh, of Dangtu County, Anhui Province, earned a bachelor’s degree in Law from Soochow University and a doctorate degree in Law from New York University. He practiced law for many years in China and also enjoyed international reputation. He was Dean of the Law School of Anhui University, and later, among other positions, member of the Legislative Yuan, Secretary General of the Judicial Yuan, adviser to the President. Dr. Twanmoh was among the most devoted advocates of the reactivation of Soochow University in Taiwan. He was the head of the alumni association, member of the Board, and then Acting Chairman of the Board until 1969, when he was appointed President of Soochow University. He was greatly dedicated to the building up of Soochow to be a fully developed university. After his term as President ended, in 1984, he continued to work for Soochow as (the second time) Chairman of the Board until his death, devoting the very last years of his life to contribute to the development of Soochow University.  

 1983~1992   楊其銑   Edward Yang

        

         山東省濟寧縣人,東吳大學外文學系文學士、美國加州大學洛杉磯校區語言學碩士。歷任東吳大學語言中心主任、外文系教授、系主任、文學院院長、教務長、中華民國駐美大使館文化參事、東吳大學副校長、校長。先生於任本校校長期間,致力於有形(硬體)與無形(軟體)的發展,並且頗著重「質」的提高,對本校師資的加強、教學效果的提昇、學生素質的促進、研究設備的充實,尤多著力經營。

Mr. Yang, of Jining County, Shandong Province, received a bachelor degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from Soochow University and a master’s degree in Linguistics from UCLA, USA. He was Chairman of the Language Center of Soochow University, professor and Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages, Dean of Academic Affairs, Cultural Counselor of ROC Consulate in the USA, Vice President and President of Soochow University. As President, Mr. Yang worked particularly hard on raising the standards of faculty members, improving the teaching performance, raising the quality of academic work done by students, and upgrading the school’s research facilities. His work had significant results for the university.  

 1992~1995   章孝慈   Hsiao-Tzu Chang

        

         江西省南昌市人,東吳大學文學士、法學士、美國杜蘭大學法學博士。並先後任東吳大學法律系教授、系主任、法學院院長、經濟部法規委員會委員、東吳大學教務長、副校長、校長。先生主持校務期間,引導東吳成為一所具有「中國人文精神」之大學,並以寬容、愛和真誠與全體師生共勉。其全心奉獻的犧牲與努力,以及尊重師長、重視學生的態度,使全校師生感念甚深。

Dr. Chang, of Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, received bachelor degrees in Arts and Law from Soochow University, and a master’s and a doctorate degree in law from Tulane University, USA. He was professor, then Chairman of the Department of Law, and then Dean of the College of Law at Soochow University, member of the Law and Regulations Committee in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Dean of Academic Affairs, Vice President and President of Soochow University. While in office, Dr. Chang made great efforts to let Soochow develop into “a university of the Chinese humanities.” He exhorted faculty and students all to have mutual forbearance, love and sincerity. The faculty and students are obliged to his devotion, self-dedication and efforts made for the university. His consideration showed toward faculty members and love and concern held for the students will always be dearly remembered.   

1995~1996 (代理校長)蔡仲平 Chung-Ping Tsai(Acting President)

         福建省漳潽縣人,中正理工學院理學士、美國布朗大學應用數學博士。歷任美國布朗、堪薩斯、奧克拉荷馬等大學副教授、東吳大學電算系教授兼系主任、商學院院長、教務長、代理校長。在代理校長期間,先生秉持本校的傳統,以及故章校長的理念,使校務得以平穩發展。 

  

Dr. Chai, of Zhangpu County, Fujian Province, received a bachelor degree from Chung Cheng Institute of Technology and then a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University in the USA. He taught as associate professor at Brown University, Kansas University, Oklahoma University in the USA, was professor and Chairman of Department of Computer and Information Science of Soochow University, Dean of the College of Business, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Acting President. As Acting President, Dr. Chai followed the traditions of Soochow University, in particular the ideas developed by President Chang, his predecessor, to ensure the smooth operation of university. His efforts were contributed remarkably to the continued development of the school.   

 1996~2004  劉源俊   Yuan-Tsun Liu

        

         江蘇省青浦縣人,國立台灣大學物理學理學士、美國哥倫比亞大學物理學博士,自1972年起在本校任教迄今,歷任東吳大學物理學系教授、系主任、理學院院長、教務長、校長。先生為本校首任經遴選委員會遴選之校長,在任期間秉持本校樸實、熱誠與堅毅的優良傳統,和全校師生及海內外校友共同營造並維護一個祥和、開明、公正、合理的學術環境。多年來本校與台北市政府的校地爭議,在先生的努力下終獲解決。 

 

 

 

Dr. Liu, of Qingpu County, Jiangsu Province, obtained a bachelor degree in Physics from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University, USA. At Soochow University he was professor in the Department of Physics, Chairman of the Department, Dean of the College of Science, Dean of Academic Affairs, and President of Soochow University.  Dr. Liu was the first President of Soochow University elected by a selection committee. As President, he followed the time-honored Soochow traditions working with all faculty, students, and alumni, at home and abroad, to build up a harmonious, open-minded, fair, and sound academic environment.  After years of negotiations, he succeeded working out an agreement with the Taipei City Government allowing the Waishuanghsi Campus to use a piece of land that is city property. 

 2004~ 2008   劉兆玄   Chao-Shiuan Liu 

        

         湖南省衡陽人,國立台灣大學化學理學士、加拿大多倫多大學化學博士。歷任國立清華大學教授、理學院院長、校長,並曾任中國化學會理事長、交通部部長、行政院國家科學委員會主任委員、行政院副院長、國立清華大學講座教授,東吳大學校長。劉校長提倡五識教育,即知識、常識、見識、膽識和賞識。先生上任後貫徹五識教育的精神,積極地突破各種困境,有計畫地使東吳大學成為國內一流的教學大學。 

 

 

 

Dr. Liu, of Hengyang, Hunan Province, received a bachelor degree in Chemistry from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Toronto University, Canada. His career started as associate professor at National Tsing Hua University, then becoming full professor, Dean of the College of Science and then President of National Tsing Hua University.  He also served as Chairman of the National Science Council, Minister of Transportation and Communication, Vice President (Vice Premier) of the Executive Yuan, and then visiting professor at National Tsing Hua University. Dr. Liu advocates education in five fields of knowledge: expertise, general knowledge, vision, courage of exploration, and appreciation of all kinds of values. Since becoming President of Soochow University, he has put into practice this kind of education in five fields, leading the university to overcome problems and working on plans to make Soochow University take its place among the best teaching universities in Taiwan.  

2008~2008(代理校長)   馬君梅  Chun-Mei Ma(Acting President)

         江蘇省寶應縣人,東吳大學會計學系商學士,美國北羅普大學商學碩士。自1964年起在本校任教迄今,歷任東吳大學會計學系教授、系主任、商學院院長、副校長、代理校長。代理雖為過渡期間,仍秉持東吳優良傳統及治校理念,使校務穩健地持續運作與推展。

Ms. Ma, of Baoying County, Kiangsu province, obtained a bachelor degree in Accounting from Soochow University, and Master degree in Business, from Northrop University, USA. At Soochow University,she was professor in the Department of Accounting, Chairman of the Department, Dean of the School of Business, Vice President, and Acting President. During her tenure as Acting President, was kept under smooth operation and development while maintaining the excellent tradition and governance of the university.  

2008~ 2011   黃鎮台   Jenn-Tai Hwang

        

         浙江省新昌縣人,國立台灣大學化學理學士、美國哥倫比亞大學化學物理博士。歷任清華大學化學系教授、中國化學會理事長、行政院國家科學委員會自然科學發展處處長,教育部高等教育司司長、行政院研究發展考核委員會副主任委員、教育部次長、逢甲大學校長、行政院國家科學委員會主任委員、財團法人董氏基金會董事長及逢甲大學教授等職。2008年10月就任東吳大學校長。

Dr. Hwang of Xinchang County, Zhejiang Province received his B.S. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University, and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Columbia University in the U.S.A.  He started his career as a Professor at National Tsing-Hua University, and President of the Chinese Chemical Society.  He held several government positions as Director of the Natural Sciences Department with the National Science Council, Director of the Higher Education Department under the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Executive Yuan’s Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education.  He then served as President of Feng Chia University, Chairman of the Executive Yuan’s National Science Council, President of the John Tung Foundation, and Professor at Feng Chia University.  Dr. Hwang is President of Soochow University as of Oct. 2008. 

2011~2012 (代理校長)林錦川 Chin-Chuan Lin(Acting President)

       

        臺灣彰化縣人,文化大學日本研究所碩士。自1976年起在本校任教迄今,歷任東吳大學日本語文學系系主任、訓導長、外國語文學院院長、學生事務長、副校長,並自100年8月1日起代理校長。代理期間,期以樸實、務實的精神做為校務經營基本理念,繼續強化行政機制及提升行政效率,維持穩定並積極追求進步。

Acting President Lin is a native son of Changhua, Taiwan. He holds a Master’s degree from the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, Chinese Culture University. He has been teaching at Soochow since 1976 in the Department of Japanese Language and Culture, and has served multiple terms in various posts; Professor, Chairman of the Department of Japanese Language and Culture, Dean of Students Affairs, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Vice President, and as of August 2011 Acting President. With his down-to-earth approach, firm and steady paces have being taken to strengthen efficiency and the administrative mechanism, while still in active pursuit of continuous progress for the university.  

 

2012~  潘維大  Wei Ta Pan

         江蘇省泰洲人,東吳大學法律系學士美國杜蘭大學法學碩士美國內布拉斯加州立大學法學博士。自1987年在本校任教至今,曾任學生事務長法律系主任法學院院長,2012年4月1日起就任東吳大學校長。潘校長期許讓東吳成為一所尊重傳統發揮創意而又堅持不懈的教學卓越大學。

Dr. Pan Wei-Ta of Taizhou County, Jiangsu Province is a graduate from the Department of Law, Soochow University.  Dr. Pan received his master’s degree from Tulane University, and his J.D. from the University of Nebraska in the U.S.A.  He has been teaching in his alma mater since 1987, and during his tenure served in various positions including Dean of Student Affairs, Chairman of the Department of Law, and Dean of the School of Law.  As of 1st April 2012, Dr Pan Wei-Ta assumes the responsibility as President of Soochow University.  He pledges to maintain Soochow a university honoring her tradition, allowing room for innovation while remaining steadfast to her teaching excellence.
