1928~ ?      江長川     Z. T. Kaung

上海浦東人,1909年畢業於上海中西書院,1912年獲東吳大學神學士學位,此為東吳大學唯一授予的神學士學位。1914-1941年間,先後擔任上海慕爾堂3、上海虹口景林堂4、蘇州聖約翰堂5、湖州海島堂6等主任牧師。先生優異的表現在監理會嶄露頭角,成為重要的領導人物。1924年,進入東吳大學校董會,成為第一批中國籍校董。1928年,當選東吳大學校董會會長(董事長)。1941年春,當選中華基督教衛理公會會督,畢生為教會服務。

 

 Born in Pudong, Shanghai, China, Z. T. Kaung graduated from the Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai in 1909.  Then in 1912 he received his bachelor degree in theology from Soochow University, which was the only theology degree the school ever awarded. Between 1914 and 1941, Mr. Kaung worked as a senior pastor of Moore Memorial Church in Shanghai, of Allen Memorial Church in Shanghai, of St. John’s Church in Soochow, and of Haitao Methodist Church in Huchow. His outstanding performance won the recognition of The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and made him an influential leader. In 1924, Mr. Kaung joined the Board of Directors of Soochow University as one of the group of first Chinese members of the Board. In 1928, he was elected Chairman of Board  and in the spring of 1941, he was elected Superintendent of The Methodist Church for the whole of China. He worked tirelessly throughout his long terms of various offices.

 1951~1952   施季言   Shih Ji-Yan  (1882~1972)

江蘇省海門縣人,東吳大學理學士,歷任東吳大學總務、訓導、校監。來台後,任陽明山管理局局長,且為惇敘中學創辦人。
1950年,先生鑒於國家需才孔亟,與東吳校友致力復校工作,1951年10月,東吳補習學校正式招生,1952年9月,先生出任校長,苦心擘劃復校工作,厥功甚偉。

 Mr. Shih, of Haimen County, Jiangsu Province, after having received a bachelor’s degree in Science from Soochow University, served as Chief of General Affairs, Chief of Disciplinary Office, and Chief Inspector of the school.
After arriving in Taiwan, he became the Director of Yang Ming Shan Management Bureau, and later founded the Tun Hsu High School.
In 1950, he realized that the country was in need of university-educated professionals and dedicated himself, with other alumni in Taiwan, to the reactivation of Soochow University. In October 1951, Soochow Preparatory School started student enrollment, and in September 1952 Mr. Shih took office as Principal. He can to a large extent be credited with the re-establishment of Soochow University in Taiwan.


 1952~1958  王寵惠   Wang Chong-Huei (1891~1958)

先生為廣東省東莞縣人,曾至美國留學,得耶魯大學法學博士,並考取英國律師資格。返國後,歷任臨時政府外交部總長、國民政府司法院院長。抗戰時,曾任外交部部長、國防最高委員會秘書長。行憲後,復任司法院院長。
先生早年曾兩度任海牙常設國際法庭法官。東吳以補習教育復校之翌年,先生任董事長,開學之日,以拉丁諺語「所言者小,所為者大」相訓勉,喻學校雖是補校之名,而有大學之實,語重心長,師生皆深感奮。東吳得以法學院正式復校,先生奔走之功不可沒。

 Dr. Wang, of Dongguan County, Guangdong Province, studied Law and Political Science in Japan before pursuing higher studies in the United States and earning a doctorate degree in Law from Yale University. He also passed the bar qualification examination to be a lawyer in the UK.
After returning to China, he served in important positions in the National Government, was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Secretary General of the National Defense Committee and President of the Judicial Yuan. Dr. Wang, a world-renowned law scholar, was twice appointed Judge to the International Court of Justice in Hague.
In 1951, Soochow University was reactivated in Taiwan as Soochow Preparatory School, and in the following year Dr. Wang was elected Chairman of the School Board. On the day of the beginning of the school year, he quoted a Latin proverb — meaning in English “small words, big impact” — to encourage the faculty and the students that despite the school’s title being then only a “preparatory” institute, in reality it carries in itself the qualities of a genuine university. The profound meaning of what he said touched both the faculty and the students. Thanks to Dr. Wang’s endeavors, three years later, the school could be registered as Soochow Law College, to which his contribution was undeniable.

 1958~1967   黃仁霖   Huang Jen-lin(1901~1983)

先生為江西安義縣人,曾就讀於蘇州東吳大學附屬中學,後得東吳大學法學士。曾任新生活運動促進總會總幹事。抗戰時,奉令成立軍事委員會戰地服務團。勝利後,曾任聯合勤務總司令部總司令,來台後,曾任中華民國駐巴拿馬特命全權大使。
1958年先生任東吳大學董事長,對在台復校、建校煞費心血,籌募基金,興建校舍,選聘教授,策劃良多,奠定日後擴展基礎。

 

Mr. Huang, of Anyi County, Jiangxi Province, attended the Affiliated High School and then the College of Law of Soochow University, where he received a bachelor degree in Law. Continuing his studies in the United States, he earned a bachelor degree in Law from Columbia University. Back in China, during the war, he held several positions, in the end being the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Service Forces.
After arriving in Taiwan, for many years he was the ambassador plenipotentiary of the R.O.C. in Panama.
In 1958, Mr. Huang accepted the office of Chairman of the Board of Soochow Law College. His earnest and devoted work in re-establishing the school, fund-raising, campus building, and faculty recruitment formed a solid foundation for future expansions.   

 1967~1974   孫科   Sun Ke (1891~1973)

廣東省香山縣人,曾獲得美國加州大學文學士、哥倫比亞大學理學碩士。歷任廣州市長、國民政府委員、交通部部長、財政部部長、考試院副院長、行政院院長、立法院院長、國民政府副主席。1948年任行憲後首任立法院院長,1964年後,又歷任中華文化教育基金會董事長、總統府資政、考試院院長。
1965年出任本校董事長,熱心校務,東吳今日規模,頗多先生鼓勵與領導所致。

 

Mr. Sun, of Xiangshan County, Guangdong Province, earned a bachelor’s degree in Art from the University of California and a master’s degree in Science from Columbia University. The offices he subsequently held included Minister of Transportation, Minister of Financial Affairs, Vice President of the Examination Yuan, President (Premier) of the Executive Yuan, President of the Legislative Yuan. After the national Constitution went into effect in 1948, he was the first President of the Legislative Yuan.
In 1964, he was appointed Senior Advisor to the President, and President of the Examination Yuan.  It was in 1965 that Dr. Twanmoh, a member of the Board at that time, recommended that Mr. Sun take the office of Chairman of the Board of Soochow University, which he accepted. All during his years as Chairman he was very dedicated to the development of Soochow.  His leadership and stimulating ideas contributed greatly to what Soochow is today.

 1975~1983    楊亮功   Yang Liang-kung  (1895~1992)

安徽省巢縣人,曾獲北京大學文學士、美國史丹佛大學教育碩士,並至哥倫比亞大學師範學院研究院及紐約大學,獲哲學博士。回國後,歷任安徽大學校長、北京大學教育系主任、監察院監察委員、制憲國民大會代表。來台後,歷任監察院祕書長、考試院考試委員、副院長、院長、總統府資政。
1975年,先生出任本校董事長,本著一貫的助學精神,為校擘劃和籌集經費,故在其任內為東吳謀求發展,貢獻良多。

 

Dr. Yang, of Chao County, Anhui Province, obtained a bachelor degree from Peking University and a master’s degree in Education from Stanford University, USA. Later on, he pursued higher studies in Teachers College of Columbia University and then at New York University, where he earned a Ph.D. degree. After going back to China, he filled various positions, among them President of Anhui University, member of the Control Yuan and member of the National Assembly drawing up the ROC Constitution.
After arriving in Taiwan, Mr. Yang was appointed member of the Examination Committee of the Examination Yuan, then President of the Examination Yuan, and senior adviser to the President.
In 1975, Mr. Yang accepted the office of Chairman of the Board of Soochow University. Dedicated to promoting education, he repeatedly drew up plans for further developments of Soochow University and was tireless in fund-raising. His contributions to the university were invaluable. 

 1984-1987   端木愷   Joseph K. Twanmoh   (1903-1987)

安徽省當塗縣人,東吳大學法學士、紐約大學法學博士。曾執行律師業務多年,在國際間頗享盛名。並先後任安徽大學法學院院長、國民參政會參政員、立法委員、司法院祕書長、行政院秘書長、光復大陸設計研究委員會副主任委員。
東吳在台復校,先生參與最力,先後擔任同學會會長、董事會董事、代理董事長、1969年任校長之職,歷十四年,致力建立完整大學規模,1984年任董事長,以至謝世,晚年心力悉付東吳。

 

1974-1975 (acting) and Dr. Twanmoh, of Dangtu County, Anhuei Province, earned a bachelor’s degree in Law from Soochow University and a doctorate degree in Law from New York University. He practiced law for many years in China and also enjoyed international reputation. He was Dean of the Law School of Anhui University, and later, among other positions, member of the Legislative Yuan, Secretary General of the Judicial Yuan, adviser to the President.
Dr. Twanmoh was among the most devoted advocates of the reactivation of Soochow University in Taiwan. He was the head of the alumni association, member of the Board, and then Acting Chairman of the Board until 1969, when he was appointed President of Soochow University. He was greatly dedicated to the building up of Soochow to be a fully developed university. After his term as President ended, in 1984, he continued to work for Soochow as (the second time) Chairman of the Board until his death, devoting the very last years of his life to contribute to the development of Soochow University.

 1987~         Wang Shao-Yu   王紹堉(1923~     )

  浙江省紹興縣人,曾就讀於東吳大學附屬中學,後畢業於復旦大學政治系、東吳大學法律系。歷任聯勤總部財務署副署長、台灣省菸酒公賣局局長、財政部常務次長、台灣苯乙烯工業公司董事長,中美和石油化學公司董事長。
  先生並歷任東吳大學法律系教授、法律研究所所長、台北市東吳大學校友會會長、東吳大學董事、董事長。先生曾自謂:「教書三十五年,承乏校友會職務二十餘年,擔任董事二十餘年。稱之謂既長又深,應不為過。」

 

 Dr. Wang, of Shaoshing County, Zhejiang Province, first attended the Affiliated High School of Soochow University, then was admitted to the Political Science Department of Fudan University and later to the Law Department of Soochow University.  He then went abroad and earned a Ph.D. degree from Baker University, USA. He served as Vice Director of the Department of Finance in the General Headquarters of the Combined Service Forces, Director of the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau, Administrative Vice Minister of Finance, Chairman of the Board of Taiwan Styrene Monomer Corporation, and Chairman of the Board of CAPCO.
Dr. Wang’s career with Soochow University started as professor in the Law Department, Dean of the Graduate School of Law, Head of Soochow Alumni Association in Taipei City, member of the Board of Soochow University, and then Chairman of the Board. He once said: “I’ve been teaching for 35 years, taken charge of alumni associations for more than 20 years, and worked as a member of the Board for more than two decades. It is fair to say that this has been a long and profound relationship.”  All faculty and students are greatly obliged to Dr. Wang for what he has been doing all through these years for Soochow University.
