Why Do You Need TOCFL A2 Chinese?
Why Chinese Matters Here
In Taiwan, Chinese is not only the language of daily life. It is also how you take part in campus life, get to know classmates, follow your courses, and use the university's resources.
What Does A2 Actually Mean?
A2 does not mean you must already be fluent. It means you have basic communication skills in Chinese, enough to handle many everyday situations.
In other words, A2 is enough to help you start living and studying in Taiwan.
Am I Already at A2?
The A2 required for admission follows the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which describes a basic level of Chinese. If you have taken a Chinese proficiency test, reaching any of the levels below counts as A2 or above:
Equivalent Level |
|---|---|
| CEFR Common European Framework of Reference | A2 |
Level 2 (Basic) |
TBCL (Taiwan Benchmarks for the Chinese Language) | 第 4 級 Level 4 |
Level 4 or above |
ACTFL (United States) | Intermediate Mid Intermediate Mid |
日本) Chuken / Test of Chinese Proficiency (Japan) | 3 級 Level 3 |
Based on the level comparison published by Taiwan's Steering Committee for the Test of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP): CEFR A2 corresponds to TOCFL Level 2 (Basic). New HSK Level 4 is likewise equivalent to A2.

If You Worry Your Chinese Is Not Good Enough Yet
If you have reached A2 but still worry about taking many subject courses in Chinese right away, this is exactly where our program steps in. The first two years are there to build a firmer foundation before you move into specialised classes.

If your goal is an official A2 certificate, the key step is getting familiar with Taiwan's TOCFL test. TOCFL Level 2 (Basic) is CEFR A2. The official site explains the test format, can-do statements, and how to prepare — the best place to confirm whether you meet the admission requirement. TOCFL describes A2 as being able to talk about your background, daily life, and familiar topics in simple sentences.
If you are starting from zero, think of it as four steps:
A2 is not the finish line of learning Chinese.
It
is the starting point of your university journey.
There is still a road between "being able to live in Taiwan" and "being able to study a
subject at a Taiwanese university".
Our program is here to walk that road with you.
